On Sasha’s actual birthday, Mom was sick, so I took an unexpected day off. When asked what they wanted to do that morning, both girls said, without prompting, “make cake”. Okay. What kind? “Speedboat cake” says Sasha Lucy. What does that look like? Noah hold her hands apart as if measuring a fish and says “like this”. And, says Sasha, it has to be red.

I look at my ingredients, and figure I have about enough to make a single round cake, and figure out a way to make something a bit tugboaty. So we mix the dough and bake it, then let it cool a bit, and I cut it, and use a cookie cutter to make two fish from the cut away part, and then make two kinds of frosting to decorate it, and put some portholes on with Smarties. When all done, Sasha takes a look at it and says “I said speedboat.” That’s when I fire up the iPad and play Cee Lo Green’s new hit song. Marcus at the office says “Hey, they’re perfect clients!”
