Typefaces on the Web
Let's face it, typography on the web stinks. Cascading Style Sheets have given designers a lot of options they didn't used to have to set type, but the limited range of typefaces available remains limited. You can always specify a face hoping against hope that someone has it installed, but if they don't, they won't see what you want them to see. You can also set up alternates, as in:
But even here, if the viewer doesn't have French Script but does have Palatino, Palatino has a completely different look. Even similar fonts have different densities, and produce different margins and take up different spaces. Often even the same font will look different under different platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux, etc), browsers (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Safari, Opera, etc), even from the same developer (for example, Internet Explorer for Mac OS X vs. IE for Mac OS 9 vs. IE for Windows).
Here are some of the most common fonts for Macs and PC (all are set to default to Times if you don't have the correct font installed): Arial, Geneva (Mac only), Helvetica, Lucida Grande (Mac OS X only) Tahoma, Verdana, Trebuchet MS, Impact, Times, Hoefler Text, Georgia, Palatino, and Courier.
Courtesy of www.codestyle.org, you can see how popular different fonts are on different platforms, specifically Windows, Macs, and Unix.
